In June 2016, Laurence experienced a life-threatening cardiac event that reshaped his perspective on leadership, gratitude, and community responsibility. After sudden symptoms at home, he was transported by emergency responders to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, Maryland.
Doctors determined that he had suffered a complete arterial blockage commonly referred to as a “widowmaker” heart attack. Immediate intervention by the hospital’s cardiovascular team restored blood flow and stabilized his condition.
The experience was both medically significant and personally transformative — the beginning of a deeper commitment to healthcare advancement and institutional support.
From gratitude to engagement.
Following recovery and completion of a structured cardiac rehabilitation program, Laurence and his wife, Fern, chose to support Shady Grove Medical Center through a philanthropic contribution. What began as an expression of gratitude evolved into a long-term partnership with the hospital and its foundation.
Over time, Laurence became increasingly involved in institutional leadership, serving on the foundation’s board of trustees and contributing to broader strategic initiatives designed to strengthen healthcare delivery in the region.
